Adjust group tutor pay using class revenue and workload: choose a higher flat rate, a base rate plus a per-student top-up, or a defined revenue share. Check the formula against likely enrollment and absences so added group revenue also pays for the teacher’s extra work.
How do group and one-to-one economics differ?
Group teaching combines several student fees within the same teaching slot. A family can pay less while the academy collects more for that slot, provided enough students enroll. Teacher pay should reflect the work involved, including preparation, managing participation, and individual feedback. More revenue does not mean every additional place becomes profit.
Compare the full cost of delivering each format. Include teacher pay, preparation, classroom costs, and administration. The unit economics of an online academy help you separate revenue from what remains after those costs.
Agree on whether the teacher’s quoted rate covers contact time alone or preparation too. Otherwise, a higher group rate can still hide unpaid work.
What do published academy prices show?
Published academy prices show what families are offered, not what teachers earn. The table uses prices supplied as of 21 October 2026. Hidayah’s group figures are assumed to mean per student per hour. Muallim-ul-Quran’s monthly figures stay monthly because converting them to hourly revenue would require a lesson count for the billed month.
| Academy and format | One-to-one price (USD) | Group price per student (USD) | Group size (students) | Implied revenue (USD per teaching hour, unless monthly) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hidayah Network, individual | 8 to 12.75/hour | — | — | 8 to 12.75/hour |
| Hidayah Network, smaller group | — | 7/hour, assumed | 2 | 2 x 7 = 14/hour |
| Hidayah Network, larger group | — | 3/hour, assumed | 9 | 9 x 3 = 27/hour |
| Muallim-ul-Quran, individual | 65/month | — | — | 65/month; hourly not calculated |
| Muallim-ul-Quran, full group | — | 43/month | Up to 4 | 4 x 43 = 172/month; hourly not calculated |
The revenue figures are arithmetic from listed prices, not reported academy earnings. Muallim-ul-Quran lists 30-minute classes 3 times weekly for these packages. The USD 172 calculation assumes a full group paying the listed fee for that weekly slot.
Which pay formula should you choose for group classes?
Choose a group pay formula according to who should carry enrollment risk. A flat fee makes teacher earnings predictable. A per-student top-up connects pay to group size. A revenue share connects pay to the revenue you define. These are policy options, not survey-backed industry norms, and each needs a written treatment of absences.
- Higher flat fee: agree on a group class fee and what preparation the fee covers. The academy carries the risk of empty places.
- Base plus top-up: define the base, which students trigger the top-up, and whether enrollment or attendance determines the count.
- Revenue share: define whether revenue means billed or collected fees, and how discounts and refunds affect the calculation.
Software should fit the agreement. Oases Online says its pay groups can follow subject, service, or location, and its preparation-time adjustment is worth considering when preparation needs separate payment. Clasify’s teacher management page says it calculates earnings from each teacher’s hourly rate and hours taught, as of 21 October 2026. That approach suits an agreement centered on taught hours.
For the broader choice of payment basis, compare per class, per hour or salary pay.
How do flat pay, per-student pay, and revenue share compare?
A worked comparison should hold student revenue constant while changing the pay formula. Compare teacher earnings and the amount left for other costs. Check whether a proposed group formula actually increases teacher pay over the existing individual rate. A formula called revenue share does not guarantee a higher payment when the group is small.
Example: assume Hidayah’s listed group of 2 at USD 7 each represents an hourly price. Revenue is 2 x USD 7 = USD 14/hour. Reuse the listed USD 8, USD 9.50, and USD 3 figures as hypothetical pay inputs; these are not published teacher wages.
- Flat rate: pay USD 9.50/hour. USD 14 minus USD 9.50 leaves USD 4.50/hour before other costs.
- Base plus top-up: pay USD 8/hour plus USD 3/hour for the additional student. USD 8 + USD 3 = USD 11/hour, leaving USD 3/hour.
- Equal revenue split: USD 14 / 2 = USD 7/hour for the teacher and USD 7/hour for the academy before other costs.
The equal split pays less than the hypothetical USD 8 individual rate. Reject that split if your aim is higher teacher pay for group teaching. None of the remaining amounts is profit until other costs are covered.
Who is billed and paid when group students are absent?
Group absence policies need separate answers for family billing and teacher pay. When a group class runs, the teacher still teaches the reserved slot despite an individual absence. A sensible starting policy is to preserve the agreed class fee, then state whether any student top-up follows enrollment or attendance. Explain that distinction before families or teachers commit.
Write down what happens when the whole group is absent, when the academy cancels, and when a family receives a credit. Do not assume a family credit should automatically reduce teacher pay. Keep the outcome record separate from the payment decision; payroll rules tied to class outcomes explain why that distinction matters.
How should preparation, group size, and platform limits affect pay?
Set the teaching capacity from the lesson’s demands before setting the pay formula. A platform’s participant ceiling does not tell you how many students a teacher can support well. Check how much individual speaking time, correction, and feedback the lesson requires. Include preparation and follow-up in the pay agreement rather than treating both as invisible work.
Platform limits also affect cost. As of 21 October 2026, Google Meet’s support page lists free meetings with 3 or more participants at up to 60 minutes, with up to 100 participants. Zoom’s pricing page lists Basic meetings at up to 40 minutes and 100 participants. Count the teacher when checking participant capacity.
According to Lessonspace’s pricing page, plans include up to 4 participants per session, with USD 0.25 per extra participant hour, as of 21 October 2026. Include those charges when checking what remains after teacher pay.
Halqora is management software for online academies. Its teacher payroll software calculates pay for one-to-one classes; Halqora does not support group classes or per-student group top-ups. Choose a system that can represent the group agreement you actually intend to pay.
