Charge enough to cover your desired pay, unpaid work, software and payment fees, then check local benchmarks. As of 21 October 2026, BLS wage data reported USD 20.84/hour median employee pay for May 2025; Indeed’s US tutor page listed USD 27.75/hour.
What do tutors earn and charge per hour?
Tutor benchmarks include employee wages, reported salaries, advertised lesson rates and platform payouts. Choose a benchmark that matches the decision you are making. Employee pay helps you assess what your time should earn. A marketplace rate helps you understand a published price, but commission changes what reaches you. None of these figures establishes a universal online tutoring rate.

Compare within the same currency and market. A US wage and a UK advertised price cannot establish a difference in tutor quality or profitability. These sources also do not establish a reliable online-versus-in-person price gap.
Why are employee wages different from independent tutoring prices?
Employee wage data measures pay for labor, while an independent tutoring price must also fund the business around that labor. BLS excludes self-employed tutors from its occupational employment and wage estimates. That exclusion makes the data incomplete for independent tutoring; it does not tell you how much higher an independent tutor should charge. Use the wage as context, then calculate your own costs.
A client may pay for lesson time while you also prepare materials, answer parent questions, manage scheduling and collect payment. Your advertised hourly rate therefore differs from your earnings across all working time. Count the work even when the invoice does not name it.
Indeed’s figures need a similar caution. The supplied US and UK pages use the general Tutor category and mostly reflect in-person work. They are useful reference points, but neither figure is a verified average of independent online lesson prices.
For a specialist service, compare the teaching scope and family commitment separately. The guide to pricing online Quran classes addresses that narrower pricing decision. Do not assume the broad tutor averages establish a Quran teacher’s pay rate.
How do Preply and Cambly rates affect your earnings?
Preply and Cambly describe different ways of paying tutors. According to their public pages as of 21 October 2026, Preply lets tutors set an hourly rate and deducts commission. Cambly states a fixed per-minute payout. Compare the money you retain with the time you spend working, rather than comparing a published lesson price directly with a tutor payout.
Preply says English tutors average USD 15–25/hour. Preply also says the trial lesson with each new student carries 100% commission. Later lessons start at 33% commission, falling to 18% as the tutor teaches more hours. Trial lessons therefore need a place in your earnings calculation.
Example: Using USD 25/hour, the upper end of Preply’s stated English-tutor range, later-lesson arithmetic is USD 25 × (100% − 33%) = USD 16.75. At 18% commission, USD 25 × (100% − 18%) = USD 20.50. Both amounts precede your other business costs.
Cambly states USD 0.17/minute, equivalent to USD 10.20/hour, and USD 0.20/minute on Cambly Kids, equivalent to USD 12/hour. Those are stated pay rates, not evidence that every available working hour earns that amount.
Preply may suit you if setting your published hourly rate matters. Cambly may suit you if you prefer a stated per-minute pay schedule. Independent teaching gives you control over your charge, while leaving you responsible for your business expenses and payment collection.
How do you calculate your minimum sustainable lesson price?
Your minimum sustainable lesson price starts with the income you need and the work required to earn it. Add the costs of running your tutoring service, then spread those costs across lessons you can realistically bill. Include unpaid preparation and administration in your workload. A full calendar of appointments does not guarantee that every appointment produces a payment.
- Write down your desired pay for the work, including preparation and administration.
- Add recurring costs such as software, teaching materials and marketing.
- Divide the total by the lessons you realistically expect to bill in the same period.
- Adjust the lesson price for percentage fees and fixed payment charges.
- Check whether the resulting price matches the service you offer and your intended market.
For a payment fee with a percentage and a fixed charge, use this arithmetic: required price = (desired amount retained + fixed payment fee) ÷ (1 − percentage fee). Express the percentage as a decimal when calculating. The desired retained amount should already include your allocated business costs.
According to Stripe’s US pricing page, as of 21 October 2026, successful domestic card transactions cost 2.9% plus USD 0.30. Stripe also lists an additional 1.5% for international cards and 1% when currency conversion is required. Apply the fee that fits the actual payment.
Example: Using the same USD 25 amount and Stripe’s domestic card fee, USD 25 − (USD 25 × 2.9%) − USD 0.30 = USD 23.98, rounded to cents. That retained amount still needs to cover your work and other costs.
When you employ teachers, separate the family’s price from teacher compensation and business overhead. Online academy unit economics explains that wider calculation. A solo tutor’s sustainable price and an academy’s sustainable price answer related but different questions.
Should you offer packages, cancellation fees and advance payment?
Packages and advance payment can make the payment schedule clearer, but the lesson price still needs to cover your work. State what the package includes, when payment is due and how cancellations change the amount owed. Write the cancellation policy before accepting payment. Platform notice windows provide examples of operating rules; they are not universal rules for independent tutors.
As of 21 October 2026, Preply’s student cancellation policy says a lesson canceled more than 12 hours ahead returns to the student’s balance. With less than 12 hours of notice, Preply says the tutor is paid. Follow the platform’s wording when you teach there.
Wyzant’s tutor policy guidance lets tutors choose a cancellation policy but treats notice requirements beyond 36 hours, or charges above the session cost, as abusive. Separately, Wyzant’s student cancellation guidance gives Instant Book lessons a standard 24-hour window. Those policies were checked as of 21 October 2026.
For your own service, explain the practical details in plain language:
- Which lessons the payment covers and how families request changes.
- What counts as timely notice and what a late cancellation costs.
- How you handle a tutor cancellation, a missed lesson or an exception.
- How an unused lesson or changed schedule affects the next payment.
Use a tutoring cancellation policy template to make those decisions explicit. Advance payment changes collection timing; it does not remove the need to record which lessons happened and which charges apply.
When should you raise your tutoring rate?
Raise your tutoring rate when your current price no longer supports the service you provide, or when evidence shows demand for your available times. Review your collected earnings, workload and costs together. Strong reviews, demonstrated results and a waiting list can support a higher price, but a rate increase should still follow a clear decision about your service and capacity.
Check whether the problem is the rate before changing it. Unpaid invoices, frequent cancellations and excessive preparation can reduce earnings even when the lesson price is reasonable. A higher advertised price will not fix a payment process that leaves completed lessons uncollected.
For existing students, communicate the new charge and its effective date clearly. Explain which future lessons or packages the change covers. Avoid changing the meaning of an already agreed package while announcing the next price.
