Under accrual accounting, prepaid tuition is deferred revenue—a liability—until lessons are taught, then becomes revenue as teaching is delivered. Under cash accounting, tuition generally becomes income when payment arrives, according to [IRS Publication 538](https://irs.gov/publications/p538).

> **Key facts:** - As of 21 October 2026, [IFRS 15's revenue principle](https://ifrs.org/issued-standards/list-of-standards/ifrs-15-revenue-from-contracts-with-customers) connects revenue to the transfer of promised services.
> - As of 21 October 2026, GOV.UK's cash-basis guidance says cash basis is standard for sole traders and eligible partnerships: record income and expenses when money moves.
> - As of 21 October 2026, GOV.UK's eligibility rules exclude limited companies, LLPs and partnerships with corporate partners from cash basis.
> - As of 21 October 2026, [IRS advance-payment guidance](https://irs.gov/publications/p538) generally includes service prepayments in income when received, with a limited deferral election for accrual-method taxpayers.

> **Definition:** Deferred revenue is money received for services you still owe, recorded as a liability under accrual accounting until the services are delivered.

## What is deferred revenue, in plain English?

Deferred revenue separates money in your bank from teaching you have earned payment for. A family can pay the invoice while the academy still owes every lesson in the package. Under accrual accounting, the payment increases cash and creates a liability. Delivering the lessons reduces that liability and increases revenue, without another payment arriving.

A paid invoice proves collection; a lesson record supports delivery. Keep both. The choice between [prepaid and postpaid tuition](https://halqora.com/blog/prepaid-vs-postpaid-tuition) sets payment timing, but does not decide your accounting method.

This is general information, not legal or tax advice; check with an adviser in your country.

## Does cash basis or accrual apply to your academy?

Your academy's accounting method depends on the rules that apply to your business, including its country and business structure. As of 21 October 2026, UK guidance makes cash basis standard for eligible sole traders and partnerships. US guidance distinguishes cash income received from accrual income earned. Neither rule means every academy should keep its books the same way.

For the UK, check eligibility before assuming cash basis applies. A company cannot use the sole-trader cash-basis rules merely because families pay before lessons. When [choosing a UK or US business structure](https://halqora.com/blog/register-tutoring-business-uk-us), ask how the structure affects your records.

For the US, IRS Publication 538 requires a consistent method. If you use cash accounting for income, you must also use it for expenses. Have your accountant confirm the method before changing how you record prepaid packages.

## How does IFRS 15 treat a prepaid lesson package?

IFRS 15 ties revenue to delivering promised services rather than collecting payment. For prepaid tuition, the useful question is what teaching the family has bought and when the academy delivers that teaching. Use the standard's framework where applicable, and ask your accountant how your actual contract fits. IFRS 15 should not be treated as a substitute for checking local requirements.

The standard sets out these steps:

1. Identify the contract with the family.
2. Identify the promised services, called performance obligations.
3. Determine the transaction price.
4. Allocate the price to those obligations.
5. Recognize revenue when, or as, each obligation is satisfied.

Keep package terms and lesson outcomes together so your accountant can connect the agreement to the teaching delivered.

## How does a monthly prepaid plan move into revenue?

Example: a family prepays USD 40 on 1 March for 8 classes. According to TarteeleQuran's fee page, as of 21 October 2026, its listed plan includes 8 classes of 30 minutes for USD 40 per month. The arithmetic is USD 40 ÷ 8 = USD 5 per class; the teaching schedule below is illustrative.

| Date or event | Cash received to date (USD) | Revenue recognized to date (USD) | Deferred revenue balance (USD) |
| --- | ---: | ---: | ---: |
| 1 March: payment received | 40 | 0 | 40 |
| End of week 1: 2 classes taught | 40 | 10 | 30 |
| End of week 2: 4 classes taught | 40 | 20 | 20 |
| End of week 3: 6 classes taught | 40 | 30 | 10 |
| 31 March: 8 classes taught | 40 | 40 | 0 |
| Alternative: 7 taught, 1 excused; reconciliation credit of −USD 5 pending | 40 | 35 | 5 |

All money columns are cumulative. For example, 4 classes × USD 5 = USD 20 earned. Deferred revenue is then USD 40 − USD 20 = USD 20.

The alternative replaces the completed-package outcome. The remaining USD 5 still needs settlement through future teaching or a refund; a billing credit is not another taught lesson.

## What happens to unused lessons, credits and refunds?

Unused prepaid lessons need a recorded outcome before your accountant can decide their treatment. A lesson still owed, an excused lesson credited against a later invoice, and a refunded lesson are different events. Do not mark every unused lesson as earned revenue simply because the month ended. Check the family agreement and the applicable accounting rules.

Keep a clear trail:

- Record whether the lesson happened or why the lesson was excused.
- Link an agreed credit to the affected lesson and invoice.
- Record any refund separately from teaching delivered.

[Forecast and reconciliation billing](https://halqora.com/blog/prepaid-forecast-reconciliation-billing) helps explain differences between scheduled and billable lessons. A negative reconciliation adjusts a bill; your accountant still decides the corresponding bookkeeping entry. Halqora does not keep a stored credit wallet.

## How is prepaid tuition treated at US tax year-end?

US tax treatment needs a separate check from your deferred-revenue ledger. As of 21 October 2026, IRS Publication 538 says advance payments for services are generally income in the year received. An accrual-method taxpayer can elect to defer the portion earned later, but not beyond the next tax year. A liability in your books does not automatically create that election.

Give your tax adviser the payment date, package terms, lessons delivered before year-end, and lessons still owed. Ask whether the deferral election applies to your circumstances. Do not move income into a later tax year just because the invoice describes future lessons.

## How Halqora handles this

Halqora is management software for online academies. Its [prepaid billing records](https://halqora.com/features/billing) show a forecast for scheduled classes and a reconciliation for the previous month: actual billable amount minus forecast, with a negative amount appearing as a credit. Those lines give your accountant a lesson-level trail. Billing runs create draft invoices for an admin to review and send. Halqora is not accounting software and does not offer accounting integrations yet.

## Questions

### Is prepaid tuition revenue or a liability?

Under accrual accounting, prepaid tuition starts as a liability because you still owe the lessons. As teaching is delivered, the relevant amount becomes revenue. IFRS 15 connects revenue recognition to the transfer of promised services. Under cash accounting, you generally record income when payment arrives. Your accounting method matters more than the wording on the invoice.

### Do UK tutors need to worry about deferred revenue?

As of 21 October 2026, GOV.UK says cash basis is the standard method for sole traders and eligible partnerships. Cash basis records income when money arrives, so deferred revenue generally does not arise for that tax calculation. Limited companies, LLPs and partnerships with corporate partners cannot use that cash basis. Ask an accountant which rules apply to your academy.

### How is a prepaid package that crosses year-end taxed in the US?

According to IRS Publication 538, as of 21 October 2026, advance payments for services are generally income in the year received. An accrual-method taxpayer can elect to defer the portion earned later, but not beyond the next tax year. A bookkeeping liability does not itself establish tax deferral. This is general information, not legal or tax advice; check with an adviser in your country.
